EDT 413: DISTANCE LEARNING MODELS AND TECHNOLOGIES

Course Description: Distance Learning Models and Technologies

In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, education is no longer confined to traditional classrooms. Distance Learning Models and Technologies is a comprehensive course designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and practical insights needed to understand and implement effective distance education systems in modern and resource-constrained environments.

This course explores the evolution of distance learning—from early correspondence education to contemporary online, mobile, and AI-driven learning environments. Learners will examine key models such as industrial (Fordist), post-industrial, open learning, flexible, and blended learning models, gaining the ability to compare their strengths, limitations, and suitability across different contexts.

A major focus of the course is on the technologies that power distance education, including print media, radio and television broadcasting, computer-mediated communication, learning management systems (LMS), and mobile learning platforms. Students will also explore emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and adaptive learning systems, and how these innovations are shaping the future of education.

Importantly, the course provides a contextual perspective on distance learning in Nigeria and similar developing regions, highlighting real-world challenges such as infrastructure limitations, digital divide, and access barriers. It also examines successful case studies like the National Open University of Nigeria, offering practical insights into scalable and inclusive education systems.

In addition, learners will gain expertise in designing distance learning programs for youth and adult learners, applying principles of andragogy, skills development, and appropriate technology selection. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate, design, and recommend effective distance learning strategies tailored to specific educational needs and environments.

This course is ideal for educators, instructional designers, educational technologists, and policymakers seeking to leverage technology to expand access to quality education.
