Course Description: Principles of Instruction (EDU 511)

The course Principles of Instruction (EDU 511) provides a comprehensive exploration of the foundational concepts, theories, and practices that guide effective teaching and learning. It is designed to equip students—particularly those in educational technology—with the knowledge and skills required to design, implement, and evaluate instruction in diverse learning environments.

The course begins with an introduction to the meaning, nature, and historical development of instruction, highlighting key contributions from early educators and the evolution of instructional theories. It further examines major theoretical frameworks such as behaviourism, cognitivism, constructivism, and social learning theory, and their application in modern educational practice.

A significant focus is placed on instructional objectives and learning outcomes, including the development of clear, measurable objectives using frameworks such as Bloom’s Taxonomy. Students will learn how to design effective lesson plans, develop schemes of work, and select appropriate instructional materials to enhance teaching and learning.

The course also explores various teaching methods and strategies, ranging from teacher-centred to learner-centred approaches, as well as modern instructional techniques supported by educational technology. Emphasis is placed on classroom communication, management, and motivation as essential components of effective instruction.
