EDU 521 – Guidance and Counselling

Course Description: Guidance and Counselling

EDU 521: Guidance and Counselling is a postgraduate-level course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, theories, and practices of guidance and counselling, particularly within the Nigerian educational context. The course equips learners with both theoretical foundations and practical skills necessary for effective counselling practice in schools and related settings.

Structured into twelve (12) modules and thirty-six (36) study units, the course begins with an exploration of the fundamental concepts, definitions, and distinctions between guidance and counselling. It then traces the historical development of the discipline globally and in Nigeria, highlighting key milestones, influential figures, and policy frameworks that have shaped its evolution.

The course further examines the growing need for guidance and counselling services in Nigerian society, addressing academic, personal-social, vocational, and psychological challenges faced by individuals, especially students. It also explores common misconceptions about counselling, ethical considerations in professional practice, and the organization of guidance services in schools.

In addition, students are introduced to essential counselling techniques, behavioural modification strategies, and the personal and professional competencies required of an effective counsellor. Major counselling theories and approaches are critically analyzed to enable students to apply appropriate interventions in real-life situations. The course concludes with an in-depth study of vocational guidance, focusing on career development theories and practical counselling techniques for career decision-making.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to apply counselling principles ethically and effectively, support individuals in making informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to educational and community development through professional guidance services.
